RULMENTUL
competition, 2nd Prize

Brasov

2024

The industrial conversion of the Rulmentul platform represented the most complex and demanding competition in which we have participated, primarily due to the extensive research and technical effort it required. The process began with an in-depth analysis of the factory’s structural and functional systems, investigating how these could be repurposed to accommodate new spatial and ecological interventions. This included exploring strategies for integrating water features within the existing infrastructure, implementing soil phytoremediation techniques using native plant species, and preserving the architectural ruin while introducing socially functional programs within its fabric.

Based on these investigations, we developed a series of conceptual and operational tools aimed at guiding the design process. The site visit was instrumental in formulating the central design premise: to maintain the urban exterior as an intrinsic and coherent spatial entity while allowing the interior halls to evoke a sense of infinitude. The final proposal synthesized these principles, articulating a deliberate tension between the enclosed nature of the platform and the infinity of interior space.
